Do you know an outstanding teacher?

Twin Rivers Unified School District is pleased to participate in the 2017-2018 Teacher of the Year program through the Sacramento County Office of Education.

Principal's Message

Dear Westside Families,

The year is flying by quickly. Where does it go? The holiday season is here and a new year is on it’s way.

Thank you to all of the parents/families who attended parent/teacher conferences. It means so much to your child to have you there.  I was privileged to get to sit in on a number of conferences. I enjoyed getting to know families and students a little better. Your child’s teacher will continue to check in with you regarding his/her progress, but please don’t hesitate to contact them if you have any questions or concerns.  The teachers and staff are committed to supporting your child while they are here at Westside and Westside Charter.

Be sure to check the Upcoming Events section of the newsletter for important dates.

We continue focusing on our the character trait Thankfulness for the month of

What is Thankfulness?

Being Thankful means feeling or showing gratitude.

What are ways you can show Thankfulness?

1. Use polite words such as “Please” and “Thank You”.

2. Recognize when others are being kind and complimenting them.

3. Smiling when someone gives you something.

4. Doing something nice for someone to show your appreciation.

5. Doing something for someone, just because.

How does your family show thankfulness?

Ruby’s Baskets:  Every year Westside Charter has supported the Rio Linda Elverta Lions Club by collecting nonperishable donations  and put donations together to support Ruby’s Baskets.  This year is no different. Donations of canned goods, pasta, sugar, four, rice, beans and toys for boys and girls, infant to 12 years old are being collected at  school.  There are boxes in the office and in classrooms.  Your donation to Ruby’s Community Christmas Baskets stays in the Rio Linda/Elverta community.  Thank you in advance for your generosity.

Literacy Backpacks: We are excited to extend our school focus on literacy to your home.  Your child has the honor of getting to take home the backpack for this week.  The backpack goes home on Friday and must be returned be returned on the following Thursday.  Inside this backpack you will find literature books for you and your child to read together.  Also, included in the backpack is a journal and writing supplies. Reading and writing go hand in hand, therefore, please have your child write in the journal.  Here are some ideas of what they could write about:

¨ Favorite book

¨ Favorite character

¨ Favorite part

¨ The experience of reading together as a family

Books in Spanish will be coming home as well.  We want every child in the school to be able to share this experience with their family.

Lost and FoundThank you to all of the parents who went through the lost and found during parent/teacher conference time. There are still many jackets and sweaters left, so we will be putting them out every day after school between now and Winter Break.  We will also put the lost and found out during awards ceremonies. Please stop by and look through it.  It is so helpful if your child’s name is in their jacket.  We do look through them for names and return them to the child.  We also remind children that if they take their jacket off during recess, they should tie it around their waist to be sure it doesn’t get lost.

Westside ParkSafety before and after school is very important to us here at Westside.  Please be sure that students are supervised if they are at the park.  Unsupervised students should not be at the park after school.  After school, students should go directly home.

Drop Off and Pick Up Reminder:  Bus riders and students who eat breakfast may arrive at 7:30 and enter the cafeteria.  All other students may arrive at 7:45.

As we wind up our focus on the character trait Thankfulness. I want to express my gratitude to you for trusting your children with us every day.  Thank you for your participation in your child’s education, whether through PTA, SSC, ELAC, volunteering in your child’s classroom or communicating on a regular basis with your child’s teacher. We couldn’t do it without you.

Thank you for all you do.

Laura Lofgren

Mission Statement

At Westside we believe in doing school activities together. Besides all school PE, we have all school Friday morning sing, and on Friday afternoons we all participate in a Friday activity. The sense of family and community is unmatched. If you take a walk around the campus, one of the things that will stand out the most is how recognizable the relationships are, the relationships between staff and students, staff and families, and staff with each other. For Westside staff and families, our school is their home away from home.
